Capacity Building and Skills Enhancement Initiatives taken by the Institution


The Department of English has undertaken various initiatives for capacity building and enhancement, focusing on soft skills, language, and communication proficiency. These programmes, implemented under different skill-based courses and Foundation English curricula, aim to enhance students’ employability and academic competence.

Soft Skills Development:
One notable initiative was the “Essentials of Spoken and Presentation Skills – Level I,” introduced in 2011-2012 for all departments. “Professional English” courses for different disciplines were introduced in 2020-2023. These courses focus on students’ presentation and interpersonal skills. Additionally, the “Personality Enrichment” program, has been implemented for all disciplines at Level I and Level II during the same academic year. These programmes were designed to foster confidence, team dynamics, and professional skills among students.

Language and Communication Skills:
The foundation courses in English, including “Communicative English-I” and “Communicative English-II,” introduced in 2020-2021 and recurring across academic years, serve as a cornerstone for language proficiency. Advanced papers like “Language through Literature” and “Academic Writing” further refine students’ linguistic and analytical abilities. Moreover, under the “Naan Mudhalvan” initiative in 2022-2023, “Overview of English Language and Communication” by Cambridge was offered to all departments, emphasizing global communication standards. The Public Speaking Skill is designed specifically for BA English students to enhance their speaking ability, presentation skills, and confidence in various arenas. The initiative aims to bridge the gap between academic knowledge and practical application, empowering students to articulate their ideas effectively in diverse settings.

Year of Implementation:
Most of these initiatives commenced in 2011-2012 and continue to evolve as per the need of the hour. Specific programme, “Naan Mudhalvan” a Tamil Nadu Government initiative was implemented recently in 2022-2023.
Student Enrollment and Agency Involvement:
Courses like “Naan Mudhalvan” were introduced in collaboration with Cambridge, involving a significant enrollment of students across all departments. Programmes like “Essentials of Spoken and Presentation Skills” and “Communicative English” consistently attract a broad student base, with over 700 students benefiting annually.
These initiatives reflect the institution’s commitment to fostering skilled individuals equipped with the necessary proficiency to excel academically, professionally, and personally. As per the regulation initiated by Tamil Nadu Government, The University of Madras (UNOM) collaborated with reputed training agencies like Cambridge, Pearsons to enhance the credibility and effectiveness of these programmes for affiliated colleges.
