DRAMA WORKSHOP – “STAGE IT”
DATE: 12th MARCH 2025

The Department of English, as part of its Chellitz English Literary Association, organized a drama workshop titled “Stage It!” on 12th March 2025 at Chellammal Arangam. The workshop was conducted by Dr. S. Meenakshi, Assistant Professor of English, Shasun Jain College for Women, Chennai.
The inaugural session commenced with an invocation song, followed by Tamil Thai Vazhthu and Chellammal Thuthi. Dr. V. Kavitha, the convener and Head of the Department of English, welcomed the gathering.
Dr. V. Malarvizhi, Principal of Chellammal Women’s College, delivered the Presidential Address, highlighting the significance of drama in literature and emphasizing its role in fostering creativity, self-expression, and communication skills. Following this, Dr. Maria Felci Rajathi M. introduced the resource person, Dr. S. Meenakshi, outlining her expertise in performing arts.
Dr. Meenakshi then conducted an engaging and interactive workshop, providing practical training in various aspects of theatrical performance. She demonstrated movement techniques, and expressive and suppressed emotions in acting. 130 participants actively engaged in exercises that enhanced their understanding of stage presence and dramatic expression.
The workshop concluded with a Vote of Thanks by Dr. Aparna Ashok, acknowledging the efforts of all involved in organizing and participating in the event.

One-Day Seminar on “Unveiling the Nuances of American Literature”
Date: 4th October 2024

The Department of English at Chellammal Women’s College organized a one-day seminar titled “Unveiling the Nuances of American Literature” on October 4, 2024, in the seminar hall. This event aimed to provide students with an in-depth understanding of American literature, focusing on its historical context, themes, and stylistic features. The seminar’s resource person was Mr. M. Thanga Kumaran, Assistant Professor and Head of the Department of English at S. A. College of Arts & Science, Thiruverkadu, Chennai.
The seminar began with a warm welcome address by Dr. D. Rajakumari, Assistant Professor, Department of English, followed by the Presidential Address delivered by Dr. V. Mahalakshmi Natchathiram, Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Commerce.
Mr. Thanga Kumaran’s engaging lecture provided students with a comprehensive overview of the historical background of American literature, emphasizing the cultural and social dynamics that have shaped it over time. He highlighted the distinct themes, styles, and voices of American authors, drawing particular focus to the works of Robert Frost. In discussing Frost’s renowned line, “Miles to go before I sleep,” Mr. Kumaran illustrated its rich symbolism and universal appeal, offering students a nuanced approach to literary interpretation.
A total of 116 students participated in the seminar, gaining valuable insights from Mr. Thanga Kumaran’s expertise. The session included a lively interactive segment where students shared feedback and posed questions. Many expressed their appreciation, and Mr. Thanga Kumaran’s thorough responses further deepened their understanding of American literature.
The seminar concluded with a formal vote of thanks to Mr. Thanga Kumaran and the organizing committee. The event was a resounding success, inspiring students to explore American literature more deeply and broadening their literary perspectives.

Activities for the Academic Year 2023-2024
Workshop on Dramatic Reading
Date: 16th July 2023

The Department of English at Chellammal Women’s College organized a highly engaging workshop on “Dramatic Reading”in the open-air stage on 16th July 2023. The session was facilitated by Dr. David Wesley, Assistant Professor of English at Madras Christian College, Chennai, who brought his extensive knowledge of theatre and dramatic techniques to the event. The workshop aimed to introduce students to the art of dramatic reading and provide them with practical skills in voice modulation and stage use.
The seminar commenced with a warm welcome address by Dr. V. Kavitha, Associate Professor and Head of the English Department, followed by the presidential address delivered by Dr. V. Mahalakshmi Natchathiram, Head of the Department of Commerce and Principal In-Charge.
Dr. Wesley began by explaining the fundamentals of dramatic reading, emphasizing the importance of expression and engagement with an audience. Through interactive demonstrations, he illustrated various techniques, including voice modulation, facial expressions, and physical gestures, that help convey emotions effectively on stage. The session also covered the proper use of space in theatrical performance, giving students insights into how to make their presence impactful and connect with the audience.
During the workshop, students were encouraged to practice these techniques through hands-on exercises. Dr. Wesley’s guidance helped them to explore their creative potential and enhance their performance skills.
The workshop proved to be immensely beneficial, with nearly 135 students participating and gaining a deeper understanding of dramatic reading. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Wesley for his invaluable contribution and to all the participants for their enthusiastic involvement, which greatly enriched the workshop.

 

ChellLits Literary Association Event – “Shakespeare Unbound: Ink and Inspiration”
Date: 29th February 2024

The Department of English hosted its much-anticipated ChellLits Literary Association event in the open-air stage on February 29, 2024, themed “Shakespeare Unbound: Ink and Inspiration.” Aimed at celebrating the timeless works of William Shakespeare while fostering creativity and artistic expression among students. A total of 160 enthusiastic participants took part in this celebration of Shakespeare’s literary legacy.
The inaugural session commenced with a welcome address by Dr. V. Kavitha, Associate Professor and Head of the Department of English, followed by the presidential address by Dr. V. Malarvizhi, Head of the Department of Physics and Principal. In her speech, she highlighted the importance of literary activities in cultivating creativity and intellectual growth. The Student President of ChellLits Literary Association then introduced the theme, “Shakespeare Unbound: Ink and Inspiration,” sparking excitement among the participants.
Throughout the event, participants showcased their talents and creativity through various performances. From soulful renditions of Shakespearean sonnets to captivating enactments of iconic scenes from his plays, the audience was treated to a diverse array of artistic expressions. These performances not only exhibited the participants’ deep appreciation for Shakespeare’s works but also highlighted their ingenuity in interpreting and presenting them. Recognizing the exceptional talent on display, approximately 70 students were awarded prizes for their outstanding performances.
The “Shakespeare Unbound: Ink and Inspiration” event, organized by the Undergraduate Department of English and the ChellLits Literary Association, was a resounding success. It united students from diverse backgrounds to commemorate the enduring legacy of William Shakespeare. Through their presentations and performances, participants paid tribute to Shakespeare’s contributions to literature while showcasing the timeless relevance and adaptability of his works.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all the participants, organizers, and supporters whose contributions were instrumental in making the event a reality.

Activities for the Academic Year 2021-2022
Inauguration of English Literary Association
Date: 29th October 2021


The Department of English at Chellammal Women’s College inaugurated the English Literary Association on October 29, 2021. Dr. Indu Swami, Assistant Professor and Research Supervisor in the Department of English at Assam University: Diphu Campus, Assam, was the Chief Guest. She delivered an inspiring talk on “Creative Minds Blossom: Emergence of Indian Women Writers in English Literature,” focusing on how Indian women writers have explored feminine subjectivity, covering themes from childhood through the stages of womanhood.
Dr. A. Ganesan, Assistant Professor and Research Supervisor from the Department of English at RKM Vivekananda College, Chennai, was the Special Guest for the second session. He addressed the students on “Heutagogy: The Need of the Hour.” With humor and engaging insights, Dr. Ganesan encouraged students to interact actively. He highlighted how a heutagogical, or self-determined, learning approach empowers students to identify and solve their own questions, helping them to explore their potential and enhance language learning effectively.
The event was both enlightening and inspiring, setting a promising tone for the English Literary Association’s activities for the year ahead.


Three-Day Online Workshop on “Literary History: Basics to Background”
Date: 6-8 December 2021

A three-day workshop on “Literary History: Basics to Background” was conducted on December 6th, 7th, and 8th, 2021, via a virtual platform for our II and III-year BA English Literature students.
The workshop aimed to deepen students’ understanding of the impact of socio-political history on literature from the 11th to the 17th century, covering topics relevant to their syllabus. Dr. J. Partheban, Assistant Professor of English at Government Arts College (Autonomous), Salem, served as the resource person throughout the workshop, which took place in the evenings from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm. Dr. Partheban engaged students with an in-depth exploration of the topics, guiding them through the sessions with his dynamic presentation.
Key areas covered included:

  •  Anglo-Saxon England
  •  Medieval England
  • Middle English Literature
  • Metaphysical Traditions
  • Prose in the 16th and 17th centuries

Each session was highly interactive, with students enthusiastically participating by asking questions and engaging in an oral quiz conducted by the resource person.
On the first day, December 6th, 2021, the workshop commenced with an inaugural address by Dr. G. Premasundari, Head of the Department of English and Principal In-Charge. The workshop concluded on the third day with a valedictory address delivered by Dr. V. Kavitha, Convener and Associate Professor of the Department of English.
The program was effectively coordinated with the support of the principal and the entire English Department faculty, ensuring a successful and enriching experience for all participants.

Activities for the Academic Year 2020-2021

National Level E-Quiz on English Literature
Date: 16th June 2020

The Department of English at Chellammal Women’s College successfully organized a National Level E-Quiz on English Literature. The quiz, conducted online, garnered tremendous participation and appreciation from across the country.
The event aimed to encourage and enhance knowledge retention in English literature among faculty members, research scholars, undergraduate, and postgraduate students. With the theme “Don’t study until you get it right. Study until you can’t get it wrong,” the quiz offered participants a meaningful and educational experience.
The quiz remained open for participation until June 16, 2020, during which 314 participants successfully took part in the quiz. Each of them demonstrated their knowledge of English literature and received e-certificates of participation upon scoring 50% or above.

Workshop on Storytelling by Mr. Alvin, Storyteller & Trainer.
Date: 26th September 2019

 
“The purpose of a storyteller is not to tell you how to think, but to give you questions to think upon.”
Story telling is an intrinsic part of human culture. Stories tap into human consciousness and aid in the transmission of culture, values and ideas. They incite curiosity, unleash creativity, and help push boundaries to think out of the box. In this globalized world where one’s success hinges upon one’s ability to think differently and articulate in a lucid manner, stories can be potent tools.
To encourage creative and critical thinking, a workshop on story telling by Mr Alvin,storyteller and trainer, was organized by the Department of English, Chellammal Women’s College on 26th September 2019 at Chellammal auditorium for undergraduate students.
The session began with Mrs. S. Jagadeeswari, Head of the Department of English, adumbrating the significance of stories in our lives. Mr Alvin started the session with a love story that had a terrific twist at the end. Through this story he illustrated the importance to adapt stories to different contexts. He highlighted the significance of remembering, retelling, and making connections through storytelling. To spark creativity among the students, Mr. Alvin encouraged them to create their own stories and challenged them to craft imaginative advertisements for various products using mythological themes. The session concluded with a drama performance by the students, showcasing their newfound storytelling skills.
Overall, the workshop was very informative, insightful, and entertaining. Students appreciated the experience, and it is hoped that the session provided them with a deeper understanding of the power of storytelling.

One-Day National Seminar on “Articulating Silences: Indigenous Narratives as Resistance”
Date: 13th December 2019

In honor of UNESCO’s declaration of 2019 as the International Year of Indigenous Languages, the Department of English at Chellammal Women’s College, hosted its first national seminar, “Articulating Silences: Indigenous Narratives as Resistance,” on December 13, 2019.
This seminar aimed to illuminate indigenous counter-narratives that question and challenge the Eurocentric, normative world orderin the context of accelerated globalization.
The seminar commenced with an inaugural ceremony at 9:30 am in the college seminar hall. The Principal and Program Director, Dr. V. Kalaivani, welcomed the attendees of the seminar, followed by a felicitation of the guest speakers by Mrs. S. Jagadeswari, Convener and Head of the Department of English, and Dr. V. Kavitha, Associate Professor and Organizing Secretary.
The Guest of Honor, Prof. M. Dasan, former Dean and Head of the Department of English and Comparative Literature at the Central University of Kerala, delivered the inaugural address. He commended the theme, highlighting indigenous worldviews and the close relationship between language and culture. His speech addressed the challenges of incorporating indigenous knowledge and perspectives into mainstream curricula, underscoring the political dynamics surrounding the lack of constitutional recognition for indigenous peoples and their struggle to preserve language, culture, and land.
Following this, Prof. S. Armstrong, Head of the Department of English at the University of Madras, delivered the keynote address. He reinforced the issues raised by Prof. Dasan and provided a comprehensive discussion on indigenous research methodologies, including the concepts of “talking back” and “writing back.”
Each lecture was followed by a question-and-answer session, allowing participants to engage with the speakers. The inaugural session concluded with a vote of thanks.
The plenary session commenced with an eagerly awaited lecture by Prof. R. Azhagarasan from the Department of English at the University of Madras on “Reflections on Postcoloniality and Indigeneity.” In his engaging talk, he shared personal encounters with postcolonial and indigenous writers, exploring the tensions between these perspectives. He also discussed the pedagogical implications of integrating indigenous literature into academic curricula.
Prof. T. Marx from the Department of English at Pondicherry University presented a special lecture on “Indigenous Experience and Elitist Imagination.” His insightful presentation examined the complex relationship between indigenous communities, institutional knowledge systems, and the literature about them. He highlighted the resistance of indigenous people to stereotypical representations in mainstream Indian literature.
Dr. T. Prabhu, Assistant Professor at L.N. Government College, Chennai, made a presentation titled “Cosmological Harmony and Collective Emancipation: The Inherent Essence of Indigenous Epistemes.” He explored positive models of cosmological harmony that empower indigenous resistance against Western hegemony.
The plenary session, well received by attendees, concluded with a vote of thanks at 1:30 pm.
The post-lunch sessions began at 2:30 pm, where 61 participants from across India presented their research papers in six parallel sessions. This was followed by the valedictory function.
Dr. Maria PreethiSreenivasan, Associate Professor of the Department of English at Queen Mary’s College, Chennai, delivered the valedictory address on “Indigeneity and Diversity: An Exploration through Australian Stories.” She discussed the dangers of essentializing indigeneity and emphasized the importance of embracing diversity for fostering a multicultural and multiethnic society. Her talk concluded with videos showcasing the musical performances of Aboriginal Australians.
Dr. Maria PreethiSreenivasan presented certificates to the paper presenters. The national seminar ended with a vote of thanks, marking the close of a successful and insightful event.

 

 

Faculty Workshop on Introduction to the Study of Language and Linguistics, and Modern English Language and Usage
Date: 18th December 2019


The Department of English conducted a Faculty Workshop on “Introduction to the Study of Language and Linguistics, and Modern English Language and Usage” on December 18, 2019, at the seminar hall. The primary objective of the workshop was to discuss a Learning Outcome-based Curriculum Framework (LOCF), as recommended by the UGC, and was organized in collaboration with the University of Madras. Approximately 30 faculty members from affiliated colleges participated, sharing their views and suggestions on LOCF.
The workshop took place from 12:00 noon to 3:45 p.m., with Dr. SumathiShivakumar, Assistant Professor of English at A.M. Jain College, Chennai, serving as the resource person. The program began with an invocation, followed by a welcome and introductory note from the Head of the Department of English, Mrs. S. Jagadeeswari. Dr. V. Kalaivani, Principal of the college, offered felicitations to the resource person.
Dr. SumathiShivakumar began the workshop by highlighting the importance of LOCF and its benefits for both educators and students.

  • Emphasizing self-employment-focused curriculum design
  •  Preparing students for global competitiveness and employability
  •  Bridging the gap between academic institutions and industry

Following this introduction, an interactive session began, during which Dr. SumathiShivakumar discussed the proposal to introduce The Study of Language and Linguistics as a three-part core course over two consecutive semesters in the second year, with an additional paper in the final semester. She outlined various topics that could be included in three separate courses titled Aspects of English Language I, II, and III.
Toward the end of the workshop, Dr. SumathiShivakumar received valuable suggestions from participants, which she noted for consideration in the upcoming syllabus revision. The program concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. S. Shyamala Devi, Assistant Professor of English. Attendance and participation certificates were issued to all attendees, and the event concluded successfully with the National Anthem.

Workshop on Women’s Writing
Date: 9th January 2020

The Department of English at Chellammal Women’s College organized a workshop on Women’s Writing on January 9, 2020, at Chellammal Auditorium in collaboration with the Chennai Literary Club and the University of Madras.
The resource person for the event was Dr. K. Srilata, Assistant Professor of English at Bharathi Women’s College, Chennai. The workshop was attended by students from various colleges, who found it to be highly beneficial.
The program began with an invocation, followed by a welcome address delivered by Mrs. Jagadeeshwari, Head of the Department of English. The guest was then introduced by Mrs. Girija Suresh, Head of the Department of Economics.
Dr. K. Srilata began the session by discussing the early movements of women writers who challenged conventional ideas and societal expectations. She covered topics related to women’s writing and the specific issues it addresses. The workshop included an engaging interactive session in which all students actively participated.

Literary Association – Literary Fest

To encourage students to develop their creative and theatrical talents through various literary activities and performances, the Department of English at Chellammal Women’s College organized a literary fest on 25th February 2019 in the Chellammal auditorium. The inaugural session began with the Tamil Thai Vazhthu, followed by the welcome address. The session was presided over by Dr. V. Kalaivani, Principal of the college. Dr. S. Sreelatha, the convener and Head of the Department of English, introduced the guest of honor for the day. Dr. S. Sridevi, Associate Professor in the PG and Research Department of English at CTTE College, Chennai, delivered a special lecture on “An Introduction to Literary Theory.” Her insightful talk sparked interest among the young scholars. The inaugural session concluded with a vote of thanks.
Events such as a literary quiz, mono-acting, poetry set to music, enactments of scenes from popular English plays, and other activities were conducted for the students. Prizes and certificates were distributed to the winners by Dr. V. Kalaivani and Dr. S. Sreelatha. The literary fest concluded with a vote of thanks.

The inaugural session commenced with the Tamil Thai Vazhthu, followed by a cordial welcome address by Dr. S. Sreelatha, the convener and Head of the Department of English. Dr. V. G. Vijayalakshmi, the Principal of Chellammal Women’s College, presided over the session.
The fest featured an array of engaging activities designed to spark students’ creativity. Events included a literary quiz, mono-acting, poetry set to music, scene enactments from renowned English plays, and a “Find the Literary Pair” challenge. Each event encouraged students to delve into literary arts and hone their skills in performance and interpretation.
At the end of the event, prizes and certificates were awarded to the winners by Dr. V. G. Vijayalakshmi and Dr. S. Sreelatha, recognizing students’ efforts and achievements. The Literary Fest concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks, marking the success of an inspiring and memorable event.

The Department of English at Chellammal Women’s College, hosted a vibrant Literary Fest on 16th February 2017 in the Chellammal auditorium. The event was organized to inspire students to explore and refine their creative and theatrical skills through a series of literary activities and performances.
The inaugural session commenced with the Tamil Thai Vazhthu, followed by a warm welcome address. Dr. V. G. Vijayalakshmi, Principal of the college, presided over the session. Dr. S. Sreelatha, the convener and Head of the Department of English, introduced the esteemed guest speakers for the day, who delivered insightful lectures on “Thinai Poetics & Principles of Journalism.”
Dr. S. Kanimozhi, Assistant Professor in the Department of Tamil at Chellammal Women’s College, delivered an enlightening guest lecture on “Thinai Poetics.” She provided an in-depth exploration of the concept of tinai, an ancient Tamil classification system that categorizes human emotions, landscapes, and life experiences into distinct types. Each tinai is associated with specific emotions and situations in Tamil classical poetry, embodying the close connection between the natural environment and human experience.
Dr. Kanimozhi further discussed how tinai also extends beyond geographical landscapes to non-geographical contexts, linking human emotions to different life stages and relationships. She emphasized tinai’s cultural significance in preserving Tamil heritage and its influence on Tamil literature, where it acts as a framework for expressing the shared values and ethos of ancient Tamil society. This insight offered students a unique perspective on the ways in which literature can mirror the intricacies of human experience and the natural world.
The second guest lecture was delivered by Mrs. Usha Raja, Chairperson of Newsree Media Services Pvt. Ltd., Chennai. Her lecture on “Principles of Journalism” introduced students to the foundational ethics and standards in journalism, encouraging an appreciation for journalistic integrity and professionalism.
Following the guest lectures, a variety of literary events were conducted, including a literary quiz, mono-acting, poetry set to music, and enactments of scenes from popular English plays. These activities gave students an opportunity to demonstrate their literary skills and artistic talents.
