Capacity Building and Skills Enhancement Initiatives taken by the Institution<\/strong><\/h4>


The Department of English has undertaken various initiatives for capacity building and enhancement, focusing on soft skills, language, and communication proficiency. These programmes, implemented under different skill-based courses and Foundation English curricula, aim to enhance students\u2019 employability and academic competence.<\/p>

Soft Skills Development:<\/strong>
One notable initiative was the \u201cEssentials of Spoken and Presentation Skills \u2013 Level I,\u201d introduced in 2011-2012 for all departments. \u201cProfessional English\u201d courses for different disciplines were introduced in 2020-2023. These courses focus on students\u2019 presentation and interpersonal skills. Additionally, the \u201cPersonality Enrichment\u201d program, has been implemented for all disciplines at Level I and Level II during the same academic year. These programmes were designed to foster confidence, team dynamics, and professional skills among students.<\/p>

Language and Communication Skills:<\/strong>
The foundation courses in English, including \u201cCommunicative English-I\u201d and \u201cCommunicative English-II,\u201d introduced in 2020-2021 and recurring across academic years, serve as a cornerstone for language proficiency. Advanced papers like \u201cLanguage through Literature\u201d and \u201cAcademic Writing\u201d further refine students\u2019 linguistic and analytical abilities. Moreover, under the \u201cNaan Mudhalvan\u201d initiative in 2022-2023, \u201cOverview of English Language and Communication\u201d by Cambridge was offered to all departments, emphasizing global communication standards. The Public Speaking Skill is designed specifically for BA English students to enhance their speaking ability, presentation skills, and confidence in various arenas. The initiative aims to bridge the gap between academic knowledge and practical application, empowering students to articulate their ideas effectively in diverse settings.<\/p>

Year of Implementation:<\/strong>
Most of these initiatives commenced in 2011-2012 and continue to evolve as per the need of the hour. Specific programme, \u201cNaan Mudhalvan\u201d a Tamil Nadu Government initiative was implemented recently in 2022-2023.
Student Enrollment and Agency Involvement:<\/strong>
Courses like \u201cNaan Mudhalvan\u201d were introduced in collaboration with Cambridge, involving a significant enrollment of students across all departments. Programmes like \u201cEssentials of Spoken and Presentation Skills\u201d and \u201cCommunicative English\u201d consistently attract a broad student base, with over 700 students benefiting annually.
These initiatives reflect the institution\u2019s commitment to fostering skilled individuals equipped with the necessary proficiency to excel academically, professionally, and personally.
