\/><strong>DATE: 12th MARCH 2025<\/strong><\/h3><p>The Department of English, as part of its Chellitz English Literary Association, organized a drama workshop titled \u201cStage It!\u201d on 12th March 2025 at Chellammal Arangam. The workshop was conducted by Dr. S. Meenakshi, Assistant Professor of English, Shasun Jain College for Women, Chennai. <br \/>The inaugural session commenced with an invocation song, followed by Tamil Thai Vazhthu and Chellammal Thuthi. Dr. V. Kavitha, the convener and Head of the Department of English, welcomed the gathering.<br \/>Dr. V. Malarvizhi, Principal of Chellammal Women\u2019s College, delivered the Presidential Address, highlighting the significance of drama in literature and emphasizing its role in fostering creativity, self-expression, and communication skills. Following this, Dr. Maria Felci Rajathi M. introduced the resource person, Dr. S. Meenakshi, outlining her expertise in performing arts.<br \/>Dr. Meenakshi then conducted an engaging and interactive workshop, providing practical training in various aspects of theatrical performance. This event aimed to provide students with an in-depth understanding of American literature, focusing on its historical context, themes, and stylistic features. The seminar\u2019s resource person was Mr. M. Thanga Kumaran, Assistant Professor and Head of the Department of English at S. A. College of Arts &amp; Science, Thiruverkadu, Chennai.<br \/>The seminar began with a warm welcome address by Dr. D. Rajakumari, Assistant Professor, Department of English, followed by the Presidential Address delivered by Dr. V. Mahalakshmi Natchathiram, Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Commerce. <br \/>Mr. Thanga Kumaran\u2019s engaging lecture provided students with a comprehensive overview of the historical background of American literature, emphasizing the cultural and social dynamics that have shaped it over time. He highlighted the distinct themes, styles, and voices of American authors, drawing particular focus to the works of Robert Frost. In discussing Frost\u2019s renowned line, \u201cMiles to go before I sleep,\u201d Mr. Kumaran illustrated its rich symbolism and universal appeal, offering students a nuanced approach to literary interpretation.<br \/>A total of 116 students participated in the seminar, gaining valuable insights from Mr. Thanga Kumaran\u2019s expertise. The session included a lively interactive segment where students shared feedback and posed questions. Many expressed their appreciation, and Mr. Thanga Kumaran\u2019s thorough responses further deepened their understanding of American literature.<br \/>The seminar concluded with a formal vote of thanks to Mr. Thanga Kumaran and the organizing committee. Chellammal Women\u2019s College organized a highly engaging workshop on \u201cDramatic Reading\u201din the open-air stage on 16th July 2023. The session was facilitated by Dr. David Wesley, Assistant Professor of English at Madras Christian College, Chennai, who brought his extensive knowledge of theatre and dramatic techniques to the event. The workshop aimed to introduce students to the art of dramatic reading and provide them with practical skills in voice modulation and stage use.<br \/>The seminar commenced with a warm welcome address by Dr. V. Kavitha, Associate Professor and Head of the English Department, followed by the presidential address delivered by Dr. V. Mahalakshmi Natchathiram, Head of the Department of Commerce and Principal In-Charge.<br \/>Dr. Wesley began by explaining the fundamentals of dramatic reading, emphasizing the importance of expression and engagement with an audience. Through interactive demonstrations, he illustrated various techniques, including voice modulation, facial expressions, and physical gestures, that help convey emotions effectively on stage. The session also covered the proper use of space in theatrical performance, giving students insights into how to make their presence impactful and connect with the audience.<br \/>During the workshop, students were encouraged to practice these techniques through hands-on exercises. Dr. Wesley\u2019s guidance helped them to explore their creative potential and enhance their performance skills. <br \/>The workshop proved to be immensely beneficial, with nearly 135 students participating and gaining a deeper understanding of dramatic reading. A total of 160 enthusiastic participants took part in this celebration of Shakespeare&#8217;s literary legacy. <br \/>The inaugural session commenced with a welcome address by Dr. V. Kavitha, Associate Professor and Head of the Department of English, followed by the presidential address by Dr. V. Malarvizhi, Head of the Department of Physics and Principal. In her speech, she highlighted the importance of literary activities in cultivating creativity and intellectual growth. The Student President of ChellLits Literary Association then introduced the theme, \u201cShakespeare Unbound: Ink and Inspiration,\u201d sparking excitement among the participants. <br \/>Throughout the event, participants showcased their talents and creativity through various performances. From soulful renditions of Shakespearean sonnets to captivating enactments of iconic scenes from his plays, the audience was treated to a diverse array of artistic expressions. These performances not only exhibited the participants\u2019 deep appreciation for Shakespeare\u2019s works but also highlighted their ingenuity in interpreting and presenting them. She delivered an inspiring talk on \u201cCreative Minds Blossom: Emergence of Indian Women Writers in English Literature,\u201d focusing on how Indian women writers have explored feminine subjectivity, covering themes from childhood through the stages of womanhood.<br \/>Dr. A. Ganesan, Assistant Professor and Research Supervisor from the Department of English at RKM Vivekananda College, Chennai, was the Special Guest for the second session. He addressed the students on \u201cHeutagogy: The Need of the Hour.\u201d With humor and engaging insights, Dr. Ganesan encouraged students to interact actively. He highlighted how a heutagogical, or self-determined, learning approach empowers students to identify and solve their own questions, helping them to explore their potential and enhance language learning effectively.<br \/>The event was both enlightening and inspiring, setting a promising tone for the English Literary Association\u2019s activities for the year ahead.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: center;\"><br \/><strong>Three-Day Online Workshop on \u201cLiterary History: Basics to Background\u201d<\/strong><br \/><strong>Date: 6-8 December 2021<\/strong><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\">A three-day workshop on \u201cLiterary History: Basics to Background\u201d was conducted on December 6th, 7th, and 8th, 2021, via a virtual platform for our II and III-year BA English Literature students.<br \/>The workshop aimed to deepen students\u2019 understanding of the impact of socio-political history on literature from the 11th to the 17th century, covering topics relevant to their syllabus. Dr. J. Partheban, Assistant Professor of English at Government Arts College (Autonomous), Salem, served as the resource person throughout the workshop, which took place in the evenings from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm. The quiz, conducted online, garnered tremendous participation and appreciation from across the country.<br \/>The event aimed to encourage and enhance knowledge retention in English literature among faculty members, research scholars, undergraduate, and postgraduate students. With the theme \u201cDon\u2019t study until you get it right. Study until you can\u2019t get it wrong,\u201d the quiz offered participants a meaningful and educational experience.<br \/>The quiz remained open for participation until June 16, 2020, during which 314 participants successfully took part in the quiz. In this globalized world where one\u2019s success hinges upon one\u2019s ability to think differently and articulate in a lucid manner, stories can be potent tools.<br \/>To encourage creative and critical thinking, a workshop on story telling by Mr Alvin,storyteller and trainer, was organized by the Department of English, Chellammal Women\u2019s College on 26th September 2019 at Chellammal auditorium for undergraduate students.<br \/>The session began with Mrs. S. Jagadeeswari, Head of the Department of English, adumbrating the significance of stories in our lives. Mr Alvin started the session with a love story that had a terrific twist at the end. Through this story he illustrated the importance to adapt stories to different contexts. He highlighted the significance of remembering, retelling, and making connections through storytelling. To spark creativity among the students, Mr. Alvin encouraged them to create their own stories and challenged them to craft imaginative advertisements for various products using mythological themes. The Principal and Program Director, Dr. V. Kalaivani, welcomed the attendees of the seminar, followed by a felicitation of the guest speakers by Mrs. S. Jagadeswari, Convener and Head of the Department of English, and Dr. V. Kavitha, Associate Professor and Organizing Secretary. <br \/>The Guest of Honor, Prof. M. Dasan, former Dean and Head of the Department of English and Comparative Literature at the Central University of Kerala, delivered the inaugural address. He commended the theme, highlighting indigenous worldviews and the close relationship between language and culture. His speech addressed the challenges of incorporating indigenous knowledge and perspectives into mainstream curricula, underscoring the political dynamics surrounding the lack of constitutional recognition for indigenous peoples and their struggle to preserve language, culture, and land.<br \/>Following this, Prof. S. Armstrong, Head of the Department of English at the University of Madras, delivered the keynote address. He reinforced the issues raised by Prof. Dasan and provided a comprehensive discussion on indigenous research methodologies, including the concepts of \u201ctalking back\u201d and \u201cwriting back.\u201d<br \/>Each lecture was followed by a question-and-answer session, allowing participants to engage with the speakers. Marx from the Department of English at Pondicherry University presented a special lecture on \u201cIndigenous Experience and Elitist Imagination.\u201d His insightful presentation examined the complex relationship between indigenous communities, institutional knowledge systems, and the literature about them. He highlighted the resistance of indigenous people to stereotypical representations in mainstream Indian literature.<br \/>Dr. T. Prabhu, Assistant Professor at L.N. Government College, Chennai, made a presentation titled \u201cCosmological Harmony and Collective Emancipation: The Inherent Essence of Indigenous Epistemes.\u201d He explored positive models of cosmological harmony that empower indigenous resistance against Western hegemony.<br \/>The plenary session, well received by attendees, concluded with a vote of thanks at 1:30 pm.<br \/>The post-lunch sessions began at 2:30 pm, where 61 participants from across India presented their research papers in six parallel sessions. The primary objective of the workshop was to discuss a Learning Outcome-based Curriculum Framework (LOCF), as recommended by the UGC, and was organized in collaboration with the University of Madras. Approximately 30 faculty members from affiliated colleges participated, sharing their views and suggestions on LOCF.<br \/>The workshop took place from 12:00 noon to 3:45 p.m., with Dr. SumathiShivakumar, Assistant Professor of English at A.M. Each tinai is associated with specific emotions and situations in Tamil classical poetry, embodying the close connection between the natural environment and human experience.<br \/>Dr. Kanimozhi further discussed how tinai also extends beyond geographical landscapes to non-geographical contexts, linking human emotions to different life stages and relationships. She emphasized tinai\u2019s cultural significance in preserving Tamil heritage and its influence on Tamil literature, where it acts as a framework for expressing the shared values and ethos of ancient Tamil society. This insight offered students a unique perspective on the ways in which literature can mirror the intricacies of human experience and the natural world.<br \/>The second guest lecture was delivered by Mrs. Usha Raja, Chairperson of Newsree Media Services Pvt. Ltd., Chennai.
